Scheduled Tree Surgery Work – Car Park O4 & O6 https://ucdestates.ie/blog/2020/02/11/scheduled-tree-surgery-work-car-park-o4/ Tue, 11 Feb 2020 09:59:10 +0000 https://ucdestates.ie/?p=5129 Grounds & Landscaping Date13 February 2020 Summary:

From Thursday February 13th, a number of parking spaces within car park O4 (rear of George Moore Centre for Business & Lochlann Quinn School of Business) and O6 (Roebuck Residences) will be closed for tree surgery, transplanting & planting.

What is happening? We are currently starting to prepare the site for construction of the Student Residence Masterplan Phase 2 project. The proposed development will increase UCD student residential accommodation by adding 1254 bed spaces and provide ancillary and complementary facilities to create a living campus community in a new residential village connected to and integrated with the existing residential villages. These works necessitate the removal of a number of trees. All trees in this area have been surveyed by a professional Arborist and any identified as being suitable for transplanting are currently being relocated to other areas of the campus. As part of the Student Residence Masterplan, an extensive planting programme including trees, naturalised areas and amenity planting will be carried out, in addition to our annual tree planting programme which is currently ongoing.

Why now? In compliance with Section 40 of the Wildlife Act, all tree surgery and transplanting works will take place before the commencement of Bird nesting season. All works will be informed by professional Ecologist and Arborist advice as appropriate.

When will the works start, when will they be finish and which parking areas will be affected? The works will be carried out during the month of February. A number of parking spaces will be affected in the car park on a rolling basis. As work is completed in particular areas parking spaces will be returned for use by motorists.

Apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Smarter Travel Campus – Light up your Bike! https://ucdestates.ie/blog/2020/01/10/smarter-travel-campus-light-up-your-ride/ Fri, 10 Jan 2020 13:01:28 +0000 https://ucdestates.ie/?p=5010 January 2020 Summary:

Being able to see and to be seen are two of the most important safety considerations cyclists should take into account during winter bike commuting. The UCD Smarter Travel Group, with assistance from An Garda Siochana, will be running two evening “Light up your Bike” events at the N11 and Clonskeagh exits of the Belfield Campus where we will be providing front and rear bike lights that can be used as a back up emergency set for campus cyclists with damaged or missing lights.

Tuesday 21st January: Clonskeagh exit, 16:00 – 18:00 Thursday 23rd January: N11 exit, 16:00 – 18:00

Smarter Travel Group Chair, Mark d’Alton said, “We are very keen that everybody commuting by bicycle stay as safe as they possibly can – and that means being well lit up, particularly at this time of year. Everybody should have at least one good light front and rear. We are holding this event to highlight to all cycling commuters the importance of making sure that they are visible to other road users – and that they also need to obey the law. We would encourage every cyclist to make sure that they have good lights and that are in proper working order.”

Green Campus: Reducing Our Carbon Footprint https://ucdestates.ie/blog/2019/12/19/green-campus-reducing-our-carbon-footprint/ Thu, 19 Dec 2019 08:47:53 +0000 https://ucdestates.ie/?p=4988

Duvets for Dogs: Estate Services and Green Campus Help Donate 3,000 Duvets Since 2016 https://ucdestates.ie/blog/2019/12/05/duvets-for-dogs-estate-services-and-green-campus-help-donate-4000-duvets-since-2016/ Thu, 05 Dec 2019 08:10:31 +0000 https://ucdestates.ie/?p=4949

UCD Estate Services and UCD Green Campus support Dogs Trust donating almost 3,000 duvets and saving 3,920 kilos of waste from landfill since 2016.

Duvets for Dogs is a UCD Green Campus initiative that takes place when there is a turnover of students in the Residences. Instead of residents disposing of their duvet as they leave campus, Duvets for Dogs allows them the option to donate it to Dogs Trust Ireland.

If you are a UCD resident you may have the following Questions:

What does a donation consist of?

Dogs Trust (shipping containers)

Only clean duvets are accepted. No rips or tears in the duvet, no stains of any kind. No duvet cover / bed sheets / pillows – Please remove your duvet cover before placing the duvet into the plastic bag. It cannot be accepted with a cover. Protect the duvet from getting damp while in storage – roll up the Duvet in a plastic bag.

Husky Rescue Ireland (lockable bins)

Place the items into a clear biodegradable bag (available from your RA) to prevent them from getting damp. Ensure the items are clean and dry, no stains of any kind. No pillows or duvets.

Why does my donation make a difference?

Your donation creates a circular economy from redirecting something that could be labelled as waste to giving it a second lease of life.

Dogs love soft beds to have a snooze on, providing them a comfy bed is just one step towards making them happy.

When and where is the donation taking place?

Bagged duvets are to be placed into shipping containers in Glenomena and Ashfield Car Parks between the hours of 04.00 to 22.00 from 16th of December until the 23rd of December.

Bagged Husky items can be placed in the Lockable bins in Glenomena and Ashfield located near the shipping containers.
