The St. Patrick’s Day public holiday weekend is the first major switch-off opportunity of the year.  It also offers an opportunity to provide an update on progress towards our 2020 target.

The festive period is with us again – which means that University buildings will be closed for 11 consecutive days. This marks the longest period of time that the University is closed all year and therefore offers us considerable potential to reduce our carbon emissions and energy usage.

During the summer we upgraded existing lighting to high efficiency LED in a number of locations across the University. LED lighting uses up to 50% less electricity, has a much longer life-span and provides better light quality.

Before you leave the campus this evening we would like to update you on the switch-off campaign and energy efficiency improvements to date, and please switch-off (body, mind and those pesky monitors ?) before you leave.

As we approach the May Bank Holiday weekend, please remember to switch-off computers, laptops, printers, monitors and screens or non-essential laboratory equipment such as drying ovens and fume-cupboards.

With the long weekend approaching we would like to remind you of the benefits of shutting down non-essential equipment this long weekend and to provide you with an update on the overall electricity usage in UCD.
